JEFFERSON - The Monroe boys tennis team's
6-1 victory against Jefferson in the season opener Thursday was the perfect scenario for coach Brad Saugstad.
The Cheesemakers won fairly easily, but gave Saugstad plenty of teaching points in the process.
"What a good way to start the season," Saugstad said. "The boys fought through some first-match jitters. A lot of the boys played a much more tentative style than usual, and that allowed Jefferson to stick around in a lot of the matches. This match definitely showed us some areas that we need to work on in practice."
At No. 1 singles, Monroe's Taylor Soddy rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win against Jon Aumann.
The Cheesemakers' Jess Hager beat Lee Thompson 6-1, 7-5 at No. 2 singles, and Kevin Noriega edged Leo Reyes 7-5, 7-5 at No. 3.
In doubles, Cristian Noriega and Kevin Kohlstedt topped Riley Feldschneider and Yannic Schott 6-1, 7-5 at No. 1, Josh Riese and Jared Nix posted a 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-1 victory over Brett Kitsembel and Jimmy Nelson at No. 2, and Bob Seichter and Luke Andraski defeated Sam Monogue and Arjun Karuna Karan 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3.
