STOUGHTON - The Monroe-New Glarus girls swimming team had four relays finish in the top three to take seventh out of eight teams at the Stoughton Relays on Thursday.
The Cheesemakers' 100-yard freestyle relay team of Grace Keith, Emily Meritt, Maddie Hammer and Nina Schiro finished second in 52.20 seconds. Each swimmer in the race swam a 25 freestyle. Keith teamed with Francesca Schiro, Cammi Ganshert and Nina Schiro to take second in the 400 freestyle relay (4:03.36) where each swimmer swam a 100 freestyle.
Madison Edgewood won the meet with 144 points, which was just ahead of McFarland (142). Monroe-New Glarus (94) was just 12 points away from tying Milton and Monona Grove for fourth and six points from sixth-place Oregon-Belleville.
"It is a fun night for the girls," Monroe-New Glarus coach Linda Moser said. "It is a time when I can see what kind of depth we have in the strokes and different ways we can set up future meets. The scoreboard shows us in seventh, but this is one of the closest relay meets I can remember as far as points. Edgewood scored only 50 points more than we did. In years past, it has been closer to double that."
The Cheesemakers' 400 yard medley relay team of Mekenzie Hammer, Maddie Hammer, Anna Newcomer and Ganshert took third (4:29.74). Mekenzie Hammer teamed with Nina Schiro, Kendra Wenger and Francesca Schiro to take third in the 400 medley relay where each swimmer swims a 100 individual medley. The Cheesemakers' finished with a time of 4:40.46.
Monroe-New Glarus will host Oregon Tuesday at the Green County Family YMCA.
