PLATTEVILLE - With the championship season right around the corner, the Monroe-New Glarus swim team enters the stretch looking strong after taking third place at the 33rd annual Platteville Invitational Saturday.
Baraboo captured the team title 487.5-446 over runner-up Sauk Prairie. The Cheesemakers took third (337.5) and set 16 personal-best times.
"The girls showed up strong and determined with 16 PRs," Monroe-New Glarus coach Linda Moser said.
Monroe-New Glarus freshman Mekenzie Hammer won the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2 minutes, 18.47 seconds and she finished first in the 100 backstroke (59.45).
Freshman Francesca Schiro took second in the 100 freestyle (57.54) and second in the 200 freestyle (2:07.72).
"Both of those were personal-bests for Francesca," Moser said.
Francesca Schiro and Mekeznie Hammer teamed with their older sisters Nina Schiro and Maddie Hammer to finish second in the 400 freestyle relay (3:53.03).
Maddie Hammer placed third in the 200 IM (2:22.46). The Cheesemakers' 200 medley relay team of Mekenzie Hammer, Maddie Hammer, Grace Keith and Cammi Ganshert took third with a PR of 1:58.17.
The 200 medley relay really got things going in the right direction," Moser said.
The Cheesemakers' 200 freestyle relay team of Keith, Emily Meritt, Megan Benzschawel and Ganshert took fifth with a PR of 1:52.07.
"A big part of scoring more than in the past were our B relays," Moser said. "They through with placings much higher than past years."
The Cheesemakers' second 400 freestyle relay team of Keith, Meritt, Benzschawel and Ganshert finished sixth (4;07.49). Nina Schiro and Francesca Schiro teamed with Anna Newcomer and Benzschawel to take ninth in the 200 medley relay with a PR of 2:07.57). The Cheesemakers' second 200 freestyle relay team of Kendra Wenger, Kayleigh Nesbitt, Laurel Houston and Newcomer took 10th with a PR of 1:59.20.
"These relays along with the individual swims of many that didn't finish in the top three added points to our score at a higher percentage this year than last year," Moser said.
Monroe-New Glarus will swim in the Badger South Conference meet Saturday at Monona Grove High School.
"Our next challenge is the Badger South Conference meet and we are up for the challenge," Moser said.
