MILTON - The Monroe Cheesemakers got strong performances from their 400 meter free relay team and a personal record from Kendall Niffenegger in the 100 meter butterfly, but still fell to Milton, 97-73, on Tuesday.
Junior Leanna Schwartzlow took first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.64 and the 400 meter free relay team of Niffenegger, Schwartzlow, senior Jess Weeden, and freshman Rachel Root finished first with their best time yet this season in 3:52.59.
The 200 Medley Relay team of senior Randi Robertson, Weeden, freshman Sarah Kind, and Niffenegger finished second with a time of 2:01.68.
In the 100 meter backstroke, Root swam to a second-place finish with a personal record time of 1:02.61 and senior Sara Heitkamp took third in 1:03.13, also a personal record.
"The girls kept pace with Milton," said Monroe head coach Linda Moser. "They are one of the top teams in the Badger South right now. I was very proud of the girls for not letting down for a minute. I know they have it in them to rise above and take the challenge and it's moments like this that show what they are capable of doing."
Monroe's next meet is an invitational at Fort Atkinson, Saturday. Milton won the junior varsity meet, 68.50-43.50.
