EDGERTON - The Monroe High School girls tennis team picked up its first win of the season Thursday.
Monroe (1-5) defeated Wisconsin Dells 4-3 at the Edgerton Quad. The Cheesemakers (1-5) also lost 5-2 to both Columbus and Edgerton.
"We won more matches today than we did Monday which was a good sign, and I saw most of our players doing some better things," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "Our singles players hit with better consistency, and our doubles teams were putting more balls away. Still though, we are making too many mistakes early in points, and we didn't have enough control over our shots. When we become more consistent with our hitting we will be able to play with more strategy and have more success."
Monroe senior Eva Priewe at No. 1 singles went 3-0, and sophomore Ashley Placek at No. 2 singles went 2-1.
Priewe defeated Columbus' Taylor Lang 6-1, 6-0. She beat Edgerton's Emily Mogden 6-0, 6-0 and defeated Wisconsin Dells' Alyssa Baker 6-0, 6-0.
"I liked how Eva was playing more aggressively today," Saugstad said. "She was hitting some strong forehands and finished quite a few points at the net. It was a great day for her."
The other point for the Cheesemakers against Columbus came from the No. 1 doubles team of senior Katie Demianiuk and sophomore Maggie Setterstrom. Demianiuk and Setterstrom defeated Natalie Cass and Mary Larson 6-0, 6-0.
In the match against Edgerton, Placek defeated Molly McNett 6-4, 6-0. Edgerton's Abby Dewar and Sally Lemke at No. 1 doubles edged Demianiuk and Setterstrom in 6-2, 3-6, 10-5 with a super tiebreaker used to decide the final set.
"Ashley improved with each match she played," Saugstad said. "During the last match against Edgerton, Ashley was hitting a lot of good short angles and running her opponent all over the court."
Against the Dells, Placek beat Allison Fladhammer 6-0, 6-0. At No. 3 singles, Monroe senior Shannon Rabotski picked up her first win of the season by knocking off Christina Vulpitta 6-1, 6-1. Monroe sophomore Skye Allen at No. 4 singles beat Emma Kooij 6-1, 6-0 to also earn her first varsity win this season.
The Cheesemakers' No. 2 doubles team of seniors Hannah Zweifel and Morgan Quinn lost a tight match. Wisconsin Dells' Bailey Nehrkorn and Tamara Felton edged Zweifel and Quinn 6-2, 0-6, 11-9.
The Cheesemakers will host the Monroe Doubles tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday at Recreation Park.
