Towson, Md. - Saint Xavier University junior guard Marissa Young (Monroe, Wis./St. Joseph's College) was one of just 15 players nationwide to earn a spot on the 2010-11 Capital One Academic All-America Women's Basketball Teams when the honors were released by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) Thursday.

Student-athletes receiving this prestigious recognition are selected through votes cast by members of CoSIDA and are recognized as the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performance both on the court and in the classroom. Young earned third team recognition within the College Division of the All-America Team, which combines nominees from women's basketball teams at the NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, Canadian and two-year school levels.

"What makes this award so special is that it combines excellence in basketball and academics, which makes the honor very selective," said SXU women's basketball coach Bob Hallberg. "Marissa has always excelled in both areas and it is nice to see her rewarded for her commitment to that cause. She is a special type of player and a leader within our program."

Young currently leads the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) in both scoring (18.0 points per game) and steals (3.7 spg). Her scoring average (18.0 ppg) ranks her No. 17 in the NAIA and she is also third nationally in steals per game (3.7 spg).

Young is majoring in biology (pre-medicine) at Saint Xavier University and carries a 3.95 grade-point average. Although a junior in terms of athletic eligibility, she has completed enough hours to rank as a senior academically.

Young was one of just four NAIA players nationally to qualify for the All-America Teams joining Whitney Ballinger from Campbellsville University (Ky.), Jessilyn Conicelli from Biola University (Calif.) and Becca Hurley from Northwestern College (Iowa).

Saint Xavier (21-6 overall/8-1 CCAC) is in the midst of another impressive season and will wrap up its regular season slate on Saturday, Feb. 26, against Robert Morris University (Ill.). The final game will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Gentile Center in Chicago.
