MONROE - Monroe High School seniors Rebecca Armstrong and Alex Barenklau have been named 2013 WIAA Scholar Athletes and will receive medals from the WIAA at the school's awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 8.

To qualify for WIAA Scholar Athlete recognition, a nominee must have earned at least four varsity letters through the first half of his/her senior year and must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

"Monroe High School would like to congratulate Rebecca Armstrong and Alex Barenklau for their tremendous accomplishment," Monroe Athletic Director Dave Hirsbrunner said in a release.

Each year, member high schools of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association are invited to nominate one boy and one girl for Scholar Athlete honors. The program, which is underwritten by Marshfield Clinic, was launched in 1984 to demonstrate the positive impact of interscholastic athletic activities.

In addition to local awards, 32 of the more than 700 students nominated each year are selected for statewide recognition. Four boys and four girls in each of four WIAA divisions are honored at a ceremony held on the first Sunday of May each year in Wausau.
