JANESVILLE - Monroe's girls tennis team opened its 2010 season by going 2-1 in three duals Monday at the Janesville Craig Invitational.

The Cheesemakers defeated Jefferson 7-0, lost to Janesville Craig 4-3 and defeated Burlington 4-3.

"We are very happy with the way everyone played as a team," said head coach Stephanie Miller. "All of the girls went out with confidence and played their matches very well."

Juniors Ellie Shuda and Lily Priewe each went 3-0 in No. 2 and No. 3 singles play for Monroe.

"Lilly Priewe and Ellie Shuda had excellent days. They played solid all three matches," Miller said.

Shuda defeated Jefferson's Amanda Schamlins, 6-2, 6-4; Janesville Craig's Kaylee Rossing, 6-0, 6-2; and Burlington's Jenna Riggs, 6-2, 6-0. Priewe won two of her matches in No. 3 singles, and another in No. 4 singles. Priewe knocked off Jefferson's Stephanie Redmond (in No. 4 singles), 6-1, 6-1; Janesville Craig's Sarah Gray, 6-1, 6-4; and Burlington's Dani Evert, 6-1, 6-0.

Monroe's No. 1 singles player, senior Kristin McArdle, went 2-1 on the day. McArdle blanked Jefferson's Christy Schuld, 6-0, 6-0; topped Janesville Craig's Kelly Collins, 6-3, 6-3; and lost to Burlington's Stephanie Londre, 6-1, 6-1.

Alyssa Quinn defeated Jefferson's Paige Ganser, 6-1, 6-0 in No. 3 singles, but lost to Janesville Craig's Courtney Spiegler in No. 4 singles, 7-6 (3), 1-6, 14-12. Erica Hegi won her first varsity match in a No. 4 singles match against Burlington's Shelly Stardevant, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5).

"(Hegi) did an excellent job of playing right to the end. She played a long fought, hard match and pulled out a good win, which sealed a victory for the team," Miller said.

Kelsey Erickson and Brooke McBain went 2-1 in No. 1 doubles play. The Monroe duo defeated Jefferson (6-0, 6-1) and Burlington (6-1, 6-0), but fell to Janesville Craig, 6-3, 3-6, 12-10.

"Our No. 4 singles and No. 1 doubles teams played very close matches," Miller said, "but we need to work on finishing out the close points."

Becca Flannery and Rachel Thompson went 1-2 at No. 2 doubles and Monroe used two different combinations at No. 3 doubles. Ellie Grossen and Katie Coplien lost both of their matches to Burlington (6-3, 7-5) and Janesville Craig (6-2, 6-3), but Elisabeth Brunner and Hegi picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win over Jefferson.

"Our No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams are very new to the varsity lineup and we used the first match to get comfortable with each other and familiar as a team," Miller said.

Monroe will return to Janesville this morning for the second and final day of the invitational.
