Monroe hosts youth triathlon

MONROE - There are spots still available for children ages 7 to 17 to compete in the seventh annual Just Tri youth triathlon today at the Green County Family YMCA.

Registration for the youth triathlon is $35 for individuals and $64 for teams. Registration for children 7 to10 is from 7 to 8 a.m. with the triathlon starting at 8:30 a.m. Registration for children ages 11 to 17 is from 7 to 8:30 a.m. with the race starting at 9:30 a.m.

Children ages 7 to 10 will have to swim 100 meters, bike 2 miles and run 0.8 miles. Children ages 11 to 14 will have to swim 200 meters, bike 5.7 miles and run 1.1 miles. Teenagers 15 to 17 will have to swim 300 meters, bike 5.7 miles and run 1.7 miles.

"It's a beginners' triathlon to get introduced to the sport," said Chris Sachs, triathlon race director. "We will hold it rain or shine. If it's just raining, we will still have it."

Participants will receive a T-shirt, race number, goody bag and finisher's medal. The swimming portion of the triathlon will be completed in the YMCA's indoor six lane, 25-meter pool.

Refreshments and awards will be given away. Awards for the top three male and female finishers in the 7-14 division and 15-17 division will be given out. The top three male and female teams also will receive awards.

The grand prize award that participants must be present to win is a Trek bike.
