ORFORDVILLE - Monroe took second in team points at a tightly contested WIAA Division 2 regional Monday. The Cheesemakers are advancing all four relays and eight individuals to Thursday's sectional meet in Boscobel.

"We take the approach that we're going to put our kids in the best position possible to make sectionals and get to state," Monroe head coach Curt Miller said. "That means we'll load up the relays, but we have great depth, and that's huge."

Monroe's 114 team points trailed only McFarland (117) and was just 3 1/2 points ahead of Madison Edgewood (110.5).

"This is the first time in four years we haven't won the regional, and that's just perfectly fine with me. We had top-of-the-line performances and the field is much better than it has been in the past," Miller. "Our number one goal is to set them up for state, and really all four relays are sitting good. Hopefully, we can get some of our other kids to go, too."

The relay teams, however, moved on in stunning fashion. The Cheesemakers won the 400-meter relay, the 1,600 relay and the 3,200 relay.

The 400 relay team of Ty Gibson, Maria Eberle, Jess Miller and Jaclyn Ditter finished with a time of 57.50 seconds, more than 1.3 seconds ahead of second-place Orfordville Parkview.

Ditter, Tessa Frutiger, Molly Hlubek and Stephanie Wyss won the 1,600 (4:13.37,) and Tess Seichter, Alexa Yurs, Wyss and Frutiger won the 3,200 (10:15.5). Gibson, Eberle, Miller and Brenna Bazley finished second in the 800 relay (1:50.84).

Wyss also finished second in the high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 3 inches and took third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.98.

"Stephanie Wyss in the high jump was definitely the highlight of the meet. Her best ever was 5-1 and she made 5-3 in a very tough field," Miller said. "But she has worked super hard and defines what a Monroe athlete is with her work ethic."

Ditter won the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.95 seconds, over a second ahead of the next best qualifier. Seichter finished third in the 3,200 (12:47.09).

Laura Chopp was second in the pole vault, hitting a mark of nine feet. Bazley was third in the long jump (15-9) and Cheyenne Foster was third in the triple-jump (30-7). Jess Leu took fourth in both the shot put (33-10 1/2) and discus (100-10).

"To take someone in each field event is awesome," Miller said.

Sugar River's Ashley Brusveen won the high jump (5-4) and teammate Madeline Brunner, a freshman, won the long jump (16-0 1/2). Raiders sophomore Victoria Ortgiesen moved on in the 300-hurdles after taking second. Alison Schmitz took third in the 1,600. Teammate Rachel Miller was second in the 800 and freshman Alexis Hanson was third in the 100-meter dash.

Alison Schmitz, Katie Schmitz, Miller and Brunner took second in the 3,200 relay for the Raiders. Hanson, Miller, Emily Diaz and Megan Neperud took third in the 800 relay.

Brodhead-Juda's 400 relay team of Erin Calhoon, Larissa Klemm, Anne Hamel and Amanda Johnson advanced. The Cardinals' 1,600 relay team of Katy Sheafer, Jenessa Arnsmeier, Shannon Klein and Johnson took third to move on. Klein also advanced in the 400, which she won with a time of 59.51 seconds.

Heather Clankie, a sophomore, won the discus for Brodhead-Juda with a throw of 116-9. Teammate Rachel Nolte won the pole vault with a mark of 9-6.
