Monroe golfers shoot for top

MONROE - Hitting practice shots into a net and breaking down video tape of swings during open gyms at the Monroe Country Club is getting old for the Monroe boys golf team.

The wet weather this spring has set the Monroe boys golf team back.

"We are having non-mandatory practices in the old racquetball area at the country club because if everyone showed up there wouldn't be enough room for everyone," Monroe's first-year coach Braden Rindy said.

The Monroe Country Club was slated to open Thursday, but that plan was pushed back with the thunderstorms this week. Rain is forecasted for next week as well, so the opening of the course is in doubt.

"People are frustrated," Rindy said. "Everyone wants to get out and golf. It may be another week before the course opens."

The Cheesemakers return three of their top five golfers from a team that finished third place in the Badger South Conference last year. The three starting golfers returning include junior Eric Timm, sophomore Matt Miller and senior Caleb Pagel.

"It's definitely helpful as a first-year coach," Rindy said. "They know the ropes. They are motivated by getting better, and that is what we need to have with a season like this."

The Cheesemakers will have to replace Kyle Bruce, the team's No. 1 golfer last year, since he graduated. Timm, who shot a team-best 72 to take third place at the conference tournament last year, is expected to be the Cheesemakers' No. 1 golfer this year.

"(Timm) has worked hard on his game," Rindy said. "He just got better and better last year. He just has to get more consistent.

"We know we lost a little bit when Kyle Bruce left. We have a gap. He was a big part of our team the last few years. We will need some young kids to step up."

The Cheesemakers are also counting on senior Aaron Hesgard, freshman Tanner Thompson and freshman Alex O'Brien, as well as seniors Jason Hiatt and Austin Coplien.

Rindy likes the way Pagel and Miller have looked so far in practice. Pagel won a chipping contest earlier this week.

"They have looked very good," Rindy said. "They were both just killing the ball. They were striking the ball well. If we keep them hitting like they were, I will be really happy."

The Cheesemakers have already had two matches postponed, and a match scheduled for Monday against Fort Atkinson also is expected to be postponed.

The Cheesemakers are doing all they can to stay ready for whenever the season may start. Hesgard and Pagel each played rounds of golf during a trip to Missouri over spring break.

"Everyone is a little bit behind with the weather," Rindy said. "We are trying to keep building and fine-tuning things we can inside."

Rindy expects Madison Edgewood to be the top team in the conference this season. "Our goal is to be where we were last year," Rindy said of the team's third-place finish a year ago. "We would like to accelerate that a little bit. We are trying to build the program and make it stronger. We have some really good players at the middle school. We have a bright future."
