SPRING GREEN - The Monroe golf team shot their team average for 18 holes but finished last in the seven-team Badger South at the Badger Conference meet Wednesday, May 15.

The Cheesemakers carded a team score of 358, which Monroe coach Caleb Rindy said was around their average for 18 holes.

"We pretty much got our average for the year," Rindy said. "I wouldn't say they didn't rise to the occasion or ... get crushed by the pressure. They hit their average, but we wanted to rise more to the occasion."

Junior Eric Timm led the Cheesemakers with an 86. Senior Caleb Pagel finished second on the team (87), and sophomore Matt Miller finished third (91).

Rindy said Timm was on the cusp of an all-conference selection but will probably miss the selection after Wednesday.

"I think he was kind of disappointed," Rindy said.

Even though there was disappointment all around, Rindy said he is well aware that his team is still relatively young. The Cheesemakers stand to lose just two seniors to graduation, but Rindy said there is little talk of the future just yet.

"We're losing two seniors, but we'll still have the core of our team," Rindy said. "I will have a talk with them (about next year), but it hasn't happened yet. We will have a young team."

The main reason Monroe is still thinking of the present is regionals, which will take place Tuesday, May 21 on the Trevino Course of the Geneva National Golf Club in Lake Geneva. Tee-off is at 10 a.m.

Rindy said he and his players are looking forward to the practice time between now and Tuesday, because practices have been a bit of a rarity for the Cheesemakers.

"This is the first time we haven't been going nonstop," Rindy said. "(We'll) go to the range and work on some things, go to the putting greens and work on some things. We're thinking of (regionals) as our new season. Individually, anyone can do anything. If you feel good that day and shoot well, you get to move on. We're looking at it in a positive way."
