EVANSVILLE - After battling cold temperatures and strong winds on Thursday, the Monroe golf team got warmer but continued to battle the wind Friday at the Evansville Invitational, finishing third as a team.

The Cheesemakers finished with a team score of 358, behind top finisher Lodi (330) and Oregon (350).

Monroe was led by junior Eric Timm, who finished with an 85, good for ninth place overall and a medal.

In just the team's third competition of the season, Timm was pleased with his performance, though he admits the wind made it difficult to keep the ball where he wanted it.

"Even though it was windier today, I got off the tee pretty well but I couldn't get on many greens," he said. "It was really tough (with the wind). It felt good getting a good score ... getting off to a good start."

Monroe golf coach Braden Rindy agreed the wind was a big factor Friday, though he and the Cheesemakers were happy to ditch the cold from Thursday.

"Today went better," he said. "Kids were overall pretty happy with their scores. It had to be at least 25 mph winds coming across from the south. They were really tough to deal with. The head-on (wind) really killed some holes."

Senior Caleb Hagel came in second for the Cheesemakers, finishing 11th overall with an 86. Matt Miller finished third on the team and 14th overall with an 89.

Rindy was pleased to have three guys in the top 15 of the 12-team invite.

"They both did well," Rindy said, of Hagel and Miller. "Hagel had a much better day than yesterday. Yesterday, he had a couple rough holes but bounced back really well. (Miller) bounced back really well (from yesterday). He's one of our more consistent guys."

Results from Brodhead and New Glarus were not available at press time.

The Cheesemakers return to action for their third day in a row, hosting a best ball tournament at the Monroe Country Club Saturday, April 27. They're hoping the weather takes another step toward improvement.

"We play again tomorrow, so hopefully it will be warm with less wind," Rindy said.

Tee-off for the tournament is 8:30 a.m., and Timm is hopeful the Cheesemakers can have another strong showing at their home course.

"Hopefully we can place a couple in the top three," he said.
