JANESVILLE - The Monroe girls tennis team went 2-1 in the first day of the Janesville Craig Invitational on Monday.
The Cheesemakers lost 5-2 to Oconomowoc and then went on to defeat Janesville Parker 6-1 and Burlington, 4-3.
Monroe senior Ellie Shuda, at No. 1 singles, and Lily Priewe, at No. 2, singles each went 2-1. Shuda defeated Oconomowoc's Katie Gessert 6-2, 6-1. She beat Parker's Becky Harmata 6-0, 6-2 and lost to Burlington's Stephanie Londre 6-0, 6-0. Priewe lost to Oconomowoc's Lindsay Holsen 6-3, 6-0. She defeated Parker's Meghann Hoag 6-3, 6-0 and beat Burlington's Tanya Schillings 6-1, 6-0.
Monroe's Erica Hegi at No. 3 singles finished 1-2. She defeated Parker's Meghann Hoag 6-3, 6-0. Alisa Fager and Macayla Quinn each posted a win at No. 4 singles. Quinn defeated Parker's Emma Frericks 6-3, 7-5 and Fager defeated Burlington's Courtney Wieners 6-1, 6-2.
At No. 1 doubles, Monroe's Brooke McBain and Ellie Grossen went 1-2 in their first time playing together. McBain was a state qualifier at No. 1 doubles last year, along with Kelsey Erickson.
McBain and Grossen's lone win came against Burlington's Shelly Sturdevants and Carolyn Smith, 6-2, 6-3. Ashley Segner and Chandra McGuire won a No. 3 doubles match against Oconomowoc's Lizzy Jurrzick and Emily Kneisera 6-2, 6-3. Playing at No. 2 doubles, Segner and McGuire defeated Parker's Karissa Haney and Rosalie Sellman 6-4, 6-1. The Monroe duo lost a three set match to Burlington's Ali Seman and Olivia Leych 6-4, 5-7, 10-7.
The Cheesemakers used several different combinations at No. 3 double. Monroe's Erin Gellings and Chelsea Miller defeated Parker's Ashley Lindsay and Elizabeth Severance 7-6 (7), 3-6, 10-6. In the Burlington match, Allie Coplien and Gellings defeated Burlington's Emily Stanich and Lydia Crabtree 6-2, 6-3.
Monroe will play the second day of the invite today at Milton The Cheesemakers will host the Monroe Invitational Saturday at Rec Park.
