MONONA - Monroe hadn't played a game without Jamie Armstrong or Ashley Hermanson since 2006. Monroe also has never won six straight Badger South titles.
With a 60-31 win over Monona Grove on Thursday, the Cheesemakers did both.
Playing its second straight game without Armstrong and its first without Hermanson, who is fighting an illness, Monroe got plenty of contributions from its guards and backup post players.
Sophomore guard Kyleigh Sellnow scored 17 points and senior Emily Rufenacht added 13 for Monroe (18-2, 11-1), which shares the conference title with Madison Edgewood.
"Our kids really stepped up tonight," head coach Kevin Keen said. "Emily had another nice game, Kyleigh played great and we even got some great play out of Kylee Ritschard in the post."
Ritschard scored 10 points in a rare starting role for the Cheesemakers in the regular-season finale.
"Overall, it was a good team victory," Keen said.
Monroe jumped out to a 16-9 lead after the first quarter and by halftime held a 30-15 advantage.
"I thought our kids played really well defensively. We held Monona Grove's leading scorer (Jessica Schultz) scoreless," Keen said.
Monroe finished 17-for-23 from the free throw line, a number that Keen said any coach would be pleased with.
The Cheesemakers now have five days to rest before hosting Evansville in the first round of the WIAA Division 2 regional. That game will start at 7 p.m., compared to the usual start time of 7:30.
