MONROE - Swimming coach Linda Moser is taking a teaching approach to the Monroe girls swimming team's uphill challenge in the WIAA Division 2 Baraboo sectional meet coming up Saturday, Nov. 9.
The Baraboo sectional features four of the state's top nine ranked teams including McFarland, ranked No. 2 in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association Division 2 poll. The other ranked teams include DeForest (No. 3), Milton (No. 6) and Monona Grove (No. 9). The sectional champion and the 12 next fastest times from the four sectionals in each event advance to state.
"If you sit and look at the statistics in the entire state we don't have a good chance," Monroe coach Linda Moser said of qualifying an individual or relay for state. "It's not because I don't believe in them. They will swim the best they possibly can. We want to drop time. That is what swimming is all about. It's a one-shot deal."
Monroe senior Angie Beaver is seeded 20th in the 100 backstroke (1:14.12). Milton senior Bridgette Alexander is the No. 1 seed and has the fastest time in the state in the 100 backstroke (57.25) and the No. 1 seed and second fastest time in the state in the 200 individual medley (2:09.29). Beaver swam with an illness at the conference meet.
"I think Angie has pneumonia," Moser said. "She swam at conference but coughed a lot. I'm hoping she can swim at the sectional because it's her last high school swim."
Monroe freshman Skylar Lassen is the 20th seed in the 500 freestyle. McFarland sophomore Rina Krupsky has the No. 1 seed and the state's best time in the 500 freestyle (5:01.15) and is also the top seed with the state's best time in the 100 butterfly (57.84).
Monroe sophomore Abby Oudinot is seeded 26th out of 40 swimmers in the 50-yard freestyle (27.66) and Monroe sophomore Anna Meritt is seeded No. 21 out of 26 swimmers in the 200-yard freestyle (2:18.84). Sophomore Grace Moehn is the 27th seed in the 100 freestyle (1:03.77).
Moser said every swimmer has improved on their times from last year.
"If you look at what we did at the beginning of the year we have improved," Moser said. "You just wish you could have your cake and eat it too. I'm looking forward to seeing all of them swim. They are all tapered. You can't expect to swim your best time if you aren't tapered. I feel like their times will be better than they have all season long."
