MONROE - After coming off a last second win against Monona Grove in a Badger South Conference showdown on Friday, the Monroe girls basketball team picked up where it left off in a nonconference game against Freeport on Saturday.

Monroe sophomore Sydney Hilliard scored a game-high 18 points and the Cheesemakers had three players in double figures, 10 players played and scored en route to a 78-23 win over the Pretzels.

"I liked the energy we came out with," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said. "Our defense got everyone going at the start of the game. The hope was that we would be able to get everyone in."

Monroe (11-1), ranked fourth in the Associated Press Division 2 state poll, forced the Pretzels into 12 turnovers in the first 9 minutes. The Pretzels shot 25.5 percent (12 of 47) and made 3 of 8 free throws.

Monroe senior Jordan Hirsbrunner added 13 points and junior Sydney Mathiason had 12 points. Sophomore teammate Emily Benzschawel chipped in 10 points and junior Madison Katzenberger had eight points and hit two 3-pointers.

"Madison did a really good job and she has that ability when she steps into the shot," Mathiason said.

Monroe junior Kennedy Ludwig, who has recovered from a concussion, scored five points and had four rebounds.

"You just want everyone to keep working hard, take advantage of the opportunities and make the most of the moment," he said.

Juda 55, Wayland Academy 19

BEAVER DAM - Juda senior Chelsea Burkhalter scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Panthers to a nonconference win over Wayland Academy on Saturday.

Juda (9-5) played all 12 players and each one scored.

"We worked on our press a little bit," Juda coach Curt Brown said. "I think it was good to get everyone into the rotation and it's nice to get everyone in who works hard in practice every day."Mary Jane Grenzow 1/15/17
