MONROE - The Monroe High School girls team could be in contention for a gold trophy if everything goes right at the WIAA Division 2 state track and field meet Friday and Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse's Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Monroe girls team is entered in seven events - junior Jordan Hirsbrunner in the 300-meter hurdles and high jump, senior Abby Oudinot in the triple jump, junior Josie Eberle in the pole vault, and the 400, 800 and 1,600 relays. It's the most events the Cheesemakers have competed in at state since 2004 when they had nine qualifiers but didn't score any points.

Hirsbrunner is the second seed in the 300 hurdles and sixth seed in the high jump. All of the Cheesemakers' relays are seeded in the top five. Eberle is the sixth seed in the pole vault, and Oudinot is the eighth seed in the triple jump.

Is a gold trophy a realistic goal?

"That would be great," Hirsbrunner said.

"We are all peaking at the right time. If we keep running like we have been, things will work out for the best. Taking second in conference really put our name out there for everyone."

Wisconsin Lutheran, which competed in Division 1 last year but was bumped down to Division 2 this season, qualified in 11 events and is a top contender for the state title. Jefferson (10 qualifiers), which outdueled Monroe on May 26 for the McFarland sectional title, East Troy, Lakeside Lutheran, Osceola and the Cheesemakers also have strong chances to capture a championship.

"Anything is possible," Monroe girls track coach Matt Davis said. "If everything goes well, there is a shot we can score a lot of points. We are ready to go. The girls are excited and hungry for it."

The Cheesemakers' 1,600 relay team of senior Isabel Bazley, sophomore Mya Waterman, freshman Cammi Ganshert and Hirsbrunner is seeded second. Dodgeville-Mineral Point is looking to repeat as state champions in the 1,600 relay.

The 800 relay team of Bazley, Oudinot, Ganshert and Hirsbrunner is seeded third. Lakeside Lutheran is seeking a fourth state title in the 800 relay.

The Cheesemakers' 400 relay team of Eberle, Bazley, Oudinot and Ganshert is seeded fifth.
