MADISON - The Monroe girls tennis team finished 11th out of 13 teams in the two-day Badger Conference tennis tournament that wrapped up Saturday at the University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
The Cheesemakers took last in the final Badger South Standings with one point. Standings are based on a combination of dual Badger South match wins and points scored during the dual season and the league meet.
Waunakee, which won three of the seven flights, claimed its fifth consecutive Badger North title and avenged a 4-3 dual-meet loss to Edgewood, nipping the Crusaders for the overall tournament title 47-46.
Edgewood won three singles titles - Maddie Molitor at No. 1, Jessica Inman at No. 2 and Brita Hovde at No. 3 - in earning its sixth consecutive Badger South championship.
"We have a long way to go in the Badger South Conference," Monroe coach Tim Walsh said. "It starts with getting kids who are good athletes who want to play tennis. There are some strong teams in the Badger South Conference with really good players."
Monroe senior Chelsea Miller at No. 1 singles defeated Reedsburg's Ali Hoekstra 6-0, 6-2 in the first-round of the tournament. Moltior, the eventual No. 1 singles champion, defeated Miller 6-0, 6-0.
"She's a team player and a real leader," Walsh said of Miller. "She always plays the other teams' best player. She was just overmatched."
Monroe junior Eva Priewe at No. 2 singles beat Milton's Ashley Lester 6-1, 6-1 in the first round. DeForest's Rachel Williams then knocked off Priewe in three sets 0-6, 6-0, 6-1.
"I absolutely tip my hat to the girl from DeForest," Walsh said. "She was determined. She changed her tactics and forced Eva to hit shot after shot."
At No. 3 singles, Monroe junior Katie Demianiuk defeated Reedsburg's Morgan Rabuck 6-1, 6-1. She then ran into Hovde of the Crusaders who was the eventual champion. Hovde dispatched Demianiuk 6-1, 6-0.
"In the first match I thought she played her best match of the year," Walsh said. "Edgewood is a really strong team. They force you to make errors."
Baraboo's Alexa Lindsay at No. 4 singles defeated Monroe freshman Ashley Placek in the first round 6-2, 6-0. The Cheesemakers' senior No. 1 doubles duo of Erin Gellings and Paige Prien lost a first-round match to Monona Grove. Monona Grove's Kiana Meinholz and Liz Shaver beat Gellings and Prien 6-3, 7-5 (5).
"I really expected them to win," Walsh said. "They really weren't on their game until the second set. I was pleased with how they played. It was just one of those days where they were off."
At No. 2 doubles, Monroe's team of Maggie Setterstrom and Hannah Zweifel lost their first match to Sauk Prairie. Reedsburg's No. 3 doubles team of Kaylie Polk and Mary Kate Dischler beat Monroe's Morgan Quinn and Maija Liimatainen 6-2, 6-2.
Monroe will practice this week as they gear up for the WIAA Division 2 East Troy subsectional Oct. 6.
"We will work on fundamental skills to keep them sharp and get them to relax," Walsh said. "We will work on forehands, backhands and serves."
