EAST TORY - The Monroe girls tennis team kicked off the season losing three matches at the East Troy Quad Monday.

Both East Troy and Union Grove defeated Monroe 7-0. Whitewater beat the Cheesemakers 6-1.

The only match the Cheesemakers won came from Monroe senior Eva Priewe at No. 1 singles who defeated Whitewater's Izzy Zahn 6-0, 6-0.

"Today was a learning experience for the girls," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "We won one match and lost 20 which is obviously disappointing to the girls and wasn't the results they wanted to see."

Saugstad said many girls are playing new positions.

"Many of our doubles teams had barely practiced prior to today so I hope the girls will be able to learn what they can from these matches, let the frustration go, and work to improve going forward."

At No. 1 doubles, senior Katie Demianiuk and sophomore Maggie Setterstrom lost a close match to East Troy's Hunter Scheel and Cladia Pott 6-3, 6-4. Demianiuk and Setterstrom lost another close match to Union Grove's Janelle Sheffler and Allie Miller 6-2, 7-6 (4).

Monroe will play another quad at Edgerton Thursday.

"All of the girls put together some nice points, or had some nice stretches of play," Saugstad said. "The key moving forward will be gaining consistency in our hitting and footwork so we can string together long stretches of nice play."
