MADISON - Monroe sophomore Ciara Kaderly set a high bar in running her first 5,000-meter race in the history of the school's cross country program.

Kaderly finished 11th place at the Madison West Invitational at Lake Farm Park Thursday running the 5K in 20 minutes. It marked the first time the girls have run a 5K since the WIAA changed the length of the course this season for sectionals and state.

"Our girls really competed and went after it," Monroe coach Dave Hirsbrunner said. "I was really impressed that not one single girl complained about the 5K."

Madison West won the nine-team meet ahead of Stoughton. Madison Edgewood, the Division 2 state champions last year, finished third ahead of the Cheesemakers.

"Fourth place is probably as good as we could have done," Hirsbrunner said. "Those other three teams are ahead of where we are at."

Monroe sophomore Jordan Hirsbrunner finished 25th place (20:57) followed by senior Alyssa Dale who took 26th (20:58) and senior Elise Rossing who was 27th (21:10). Monroe senior Kelley Baumann rounded out the top five for the Cheesemakers finishing 37th (21:41).

Hirsbrunner ran the final 800 meters in 3:13.

"She really closed well," he said. "Every one of them were fired up about it (5K). They can't wait to run another one."

The Monroe boys cross country team finished sixth. Monroe senior Jeremy Miller took 20th (17:00) to lead the Cheesemakers. Junior Derek Christiansen took 30th (17:28), senior Cody Faust finished 32nd (17:37) followed by sophomore Parker Ingold who was 33rd (17:39). Monroe freshman Dylan Scace finished 37th (17:48). It marks the 20th fastest freshmen time in the history of Monroe.

"We weren't happy with our finish as a team," Hirsbrunner said. "We should have finished ahead of a couple other teams. We are not concerned about it. It's not a big deal right now. We are still working on putting everything together come October."

Hirsbrunner said after running a hard race at the Darlington Invitational, it's hard to come back and run another stellar race.

However, there were a couple of runners that he was excited about.

"Cody Faust had a breakout race," he said. "He has a ton of ability. We have been waiting for him to put a race together like that. We are hoping this is a sign of things to come."

The other runner that Hirsbrunner was impressed with was Scace.

"To make our top 20 list as a freshmen is not an easy thing to do," Hirsbrunner said.
