EDGERTON - The Monroe girls track team has some depth in the 400-meter event and coach Matt Davis will have a challenge trying to juggle the parts to come up with the best relay teams come conference time in 10 days.
The Monroe girls track team ran to a fourth-place finish (64.5 points) as a team at the Edgerton Invitational Friday. The Cheesemakers' 1,600 relay team of Isabel Bazley, Lexus Trickel, Mya Waterman and Jordan Hirsbrunner displayed the depth the team has in the 400 by winning the relay with a time of 4 minutes, 18.20 seconds.
"It's just a matter of finding out who are the four fastest when it really matters," Davis said.
Davis was excited to see the Cheesemakers finish in the top four out of 12 teams. Jefferson outdistanced Platteville for the team title 136-101.
"I was hoping to place in the top four and we did," Davis said. "I knew there was going to be some good competition here."
Hirsbrunner won the 100 high hurdles (16.44), finished second place in the high jump (5 feet, 2 inches) and took third place in the 300 hurdles (48.89).
"She had a very busy meet," Davis said.
Monroe sophomore Ciara Kaderly took third place in the 1,600 and fourth in the 3,200.
"Ciara had a big night," Davis said. "That is a lot of running. She ran two very competitive races."
The Monroe boys track team finished fifth (65). Lodi captured the title 109-82 over Watertown Luther Prep (82).
The Cheesemakers' 400 relay team of Mitch Swanson, Kendall Paulson, Cody Wolf and Blain Harpstrite won the race with a time of 45.43 seconds.
"That's a really great time," Monroe boys track coach Curt Miller said. "Two of those guys are first-year track runners. Cody and Blain have taken them under their wing and helped them along."
Monroe junior Dominick Curtiss teamed with Thang Lu, Dylan Scace and Cody Faust to win the 3,200 relay (8:18.23). It's the first 800 Curtiss has run in a meet.
"We are really strong there," Miller said of the 800. "Dominick gives us someone else we can add to our depth."
Monroe senior Mitch Keith finished third place in the pole vault, clearing a lifetime best 12 feet.
"For him to get 12 feet is going to put him in contention at the conference meet," Miller said.
