MOUNT HOREB - When Mount Horeb switched to a press to get back into the game, the Monroe girls basketball team responded.

The Cheesemakers were able to break the press and made some clutch free throws down the stretch to knock off Mount Horeb 47-33 in a WIAA Division 2 regional quarterfinal Tuesday night.

"We just needed to be the best team out there tonight and get the win," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said.

Monroe (2-21) was led by junior Whitney Disch who scored a team-high 10 points. Junior Chandra McGuire scored eight points and junior Kirsten Vetterli added seven points. Juniors Taylor Barrett and Ellie Grossen each added six. Grossen scored all of her points in the fourth quarter.

Monroe advances to play Madison Edgewood at 7 p.m. Friday, March 1.

"They have a lot of length and it will be a challenge," Mathiason said. "We have to be the best team on Friday. We have to keep on working. The key on offense will be whether we can find some points. I think making some of those shots you start to build some of that confidence."

The Cheesemakers led 37-22 early in the fourth quarter. The Vikings cut Monroe's lead to eight points, 37-29, but the Cheesemakers responded with a 10-4 run to close the game.

"They really tried to put the pressure on in the second half and fourth quarter," Mathiason said. "We were able to break their press and get some layups. We were really solid being able to find the open person on the press. Even more impressive was holding them to 33 points. I was just proud of our effort on the defensive end. Tonight, our defense was really good."
