FORT ATKINSON - Four 3-pointers from junior Brooke Adams helped the Monroe girls basketball team collect its first win of the season Tuesday in a game against Badger South conference rival Fort Atkinson.
Adams scored 15 points to lead the Cheesemakers to a 48-44 victory.
"(Adams) did a great job, and we were able to find her and she knocked down the shots," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said. "She hit two (3-pointers) in the third quarter to help us build the lead."
Sophomore Lexi Hilliard scored nine points in the win.
Monroe (1-4, 1-1 Badger South) led 25-21 at the half before stretching its lead to 41-30 at the end of the third behind a strong play from Adams and Hilliard.
Mathiason credited the Cheesemakers' ability to pull out a difficult road victory to free-throw shooting. Monroe scored five of its seven fourth quarter points from the free throw line, shooting 5 of 8.
"We made enough free throws to really hang on," Mathiason said. "Lexi (Hilliard) made two late in the game to get it back to a four-point lead.
"I'm proud of the way our girls held strong when Fort was trying to make their run."
Mathiason said Fort Atkinson (3-3, 0-1 Badger South) applied more pressure in the fourth quarter, but Monroe did "a good job holding the lead" on both ends of the court. He said the win will provide much to build on for the Cheesemakers as the season goes on.
"You just hope you're doing some things well, and you build some confidence in that," Mathiason said of the win. "You just have to get these experiences and continue to grow from them.
"We have two days to get ready for Madison Edgewood, and we have to keep our focus and learn from the things we do well and the things we don't do so well."
Monroe travels to Madison Edgewood for a game at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
