MOUNT HOREB - Both the Monroe girls and boys track teams ran to second-place finishes at a Mount Horeb triangular meet Tuesday, April 8.

Dodgeville-Mineral Point racked up 65 points to edge Monroe (58). Mount Horeb (45) finished third.

Monroe freshman Alicia Kuester running her first race in the 100-meter high hurdles finished first with a time of 17.78 seconds. Fellow freshman Jordan Hirsbrunner in her first hurdles race won the 300 hurdles with a time of 50.6 seconds.

"We had some really nice performances," Monroe girls track coach Doug Miller said. "It was an awfully good meet."

The Cheesemakers won three of the four relays including the 400, 800 and 1,600 relays. The Cheesemakers' 400 relay team of Makayla Phillips, Lauren Werth, MacKenzie Hesgard and Mafer Larraga won with a time of 53.88 seconds.

"It was a good time and close to last year," Miller said. In the 800 relay, Georgie Myers, Savannah Koester, Isabel Bazley and Mary Kelly took first with a time of 2:02.9. Bazley teamed with Larraga, Josie Eberle and Hirsbrunner to win the 1,600 relay with a time of 4:21.2.

Monroe senior Tre Voegeli finished second in the long jump (15 feet, 1 inch).

"We had very good times in the 400 and 1,600 relays," Miller said. "We are really pleased. Those times are very solid, especially for this early in the season. We haven't done a ton of outside handoff work up to this point."

Mount Horeb, which took third in the WIAA Division 2 state meet last year, won the meet with 83 points. Monroe (52) took second just ahead of Dodgeville-Mineral Point (48).

Monroe junior Cody Faust won the 400 with a time of 53.8 seconds.

"He's having a really good breakout year," Monroe boys track coach Curt Miller said of Faust. "He put himself in a position to be considered part of our relay."

Monroe's Thomas Pecora won the pole vault after clearing a near personal-best 9-6. Senior Jake Hirsbrunner finished first in the 800 (1:59.8) and senior Ethan Moehn won the 3,200 (9:28.6).

"Both of them put up good times and were by themselves working hard," Curt Miller said of Hirsbrunner and Moehn.
