Monroe girls 400 relay runs to victory

DARLINGTON - The 400-meter relay team for the Monroe High School girls track and field team continues to set a high bar.

Monroe's 400 relay team of junior Josie Eberle, senior Isabel Bazley, senior Abby Oudinot and freshman Cammi Ganshert won the race in 51.46 seconds at the Redbird Invitational on Monday.

"We wanted them to practice their handoffs," Monroe girls track coach Matt Davis said. "We loaded up the meet with our JV runners. We had our varsity run one or two races and our JV run multiple events. It was nice to see our girls compete."

Benton-Scales Mound-Shullsburg won the team title, racking up 122.5 points to finish just ahead of Cuba City (112). Darlington took third (108) and Monroe was fourth (89) in the 11-team meet. Albany finished fifth (79.5), followed by Pecatonica-Argyle in sixth (45) and Black Hawk last (10).

Monroe junior Jordan Hirsbrunner won the 800 (2:31.46) and sophomore Rachel Meier took second (2:33.28).

Pecatonica junior Josie Penniston won the 400 (1:01.14) and took second in the 200 (26.91). Pecatonica's Elizabeth Tisch took third in the 200 (28.62) and third in the 400 (1:05.47).

Albany junior Ciara Kaderly won the 1,600 (5:44.42), Darlington's Reghan Komprood took second (5:46.13), and Albany sophomore Emma Guenther finished third (5:58.64).

In the 3,200, Albany freshman Megan Anderson won (13:21.12) and Monroe's Kalee Schaefer was second (14:56.69).

Darlington's 1,600 relay team of Kaylee Meyers, Meghan Douglas, Roxi Reuter and Carly Langkamp won in 4:21.68, well ahead of second-place Albany (4:44.79). The Redbirds' 3,200 relay team of Ilse Mendez, Jaci Moseley, Paige Schilling and Erin Wolf also won (10:44.50). Monroe's Stephanie Sanft, Claire Hughes, Kati Symons and Elise Smith took second (10:57.12). Albany was third (11:01.59).

Darlington's Hunter Weber won the pole vault (8 feet, 6 inches) and Langkamp finished second (7-6). Meyers added a second-place finish in the long jump (14-111â"2) for the Redbirds.

Darlington's Olivia Whalen finished second in the shot put (32-01â"4), and Albany's Marley Malkow was third (31-101â"2). Monroe senior Brooke Rowe took fourth in the shot put with a personal best of 31-4.

The Redbirds swept the top two spots in the discus - Taryn Rankin won (118-5) and Kennedy Rankin was second (111-0).

Pecatonica's Tatum Pagel took second in the high jump (4-10), and Monroe's Sydney Mathiason and Faith Koester tied for fourth (4-4).

Monroe junior Alicia Kuester finished third in the triple jump with a jump of 32 feet, 8 inches and Lexus Trickel was fifth (31-21â"2), which was a personal best by more than 1 foot.

The Darlington girls took third in the 400 relay (53.59) and posted a third-place finish in the 800 relay (1:52.87).

Monroe junior Casey Rielly had the fastest qualifying time in the 100 hurdles but fell on her third hurdle in the final before getting up and finishing sixth. Monroe freshman Emma Sanders made the final of the 100.

"That showed a lot of character," Davis said of Rielly. "For Emma to make the finals as a freshman in the 100 was an accomplishment. That is our future right there."

In the boys meet, Cuba City edged Darlington for the title 161.5-156. Albany finished fourth (63). Monroe took seventh (39.5), followed by Pecatonica-Argyle in eighth (19) and Black Hawk finished last (2).

Darlington sophomore Grady Rielly won the 110 high hurdles (16.09) and the 300 hurdles (42.64). Teammate Mitchell Wagner took second in both the 110 hurdles (16.84) and the 300 hurdles (44.78). Wagner won the high jump (5-8) and took second in the triple jump (40-6). Monroe's Trevor Aebly took third in the 110 hurdles (16.87).

Darlington senior Sean Barbee won the 800 (2:14.85. Albany's Garrett Hlavachek took second (2:16.86). Albany's Josh Little won the 1,600 (4:51.95), and Darlington's Blake Cwynar finished second (4:52.25). Albany's Isaac Halverson took third (4:54.45).

Darlington's Connor Hackett won the 3,200 (10:18.45). Hackett and Barbee teamed with Tanner Evenstad and Paul King to win the 3,200 relay (8:44.03). Monroe's 3,200 relay team of Hunter Wild, Brock Bertalot, Kyle Legler and Brennan Shelton took third (9:36.86).

The Redbirds' 800 relay team of Kameron Blosch, Jared Meister, Rielly and Trevor Johnson won in 1:36.86. Kameron Blosch and Meister teamed with Curtis Blosch and Johnson to win the 1,600 relay (3:42.04), and the Comets were third (3:59.78).

The Redbirds' 400 relay finished second (48.24), and Albany took third (49.37). Monroe junior Dylan Beaver took fourth in the shot put (41-103â"4).
