MONROE - The Monroe girls basketball team received a No. 1 seed in the WIAA Division 2 Sun Prairie sectional.
The WIAA released the seeds, brackets and pairings for the regional basketball tournament that will start Feb. 20. Monroe (19-2) will receive a first-round bye. The Cheesemakers will play the winner of a game between eighth-seeded Portage and ninth-seeded Sauk Prairie in a regional semifinal at 7 p.m. Feb. 23. The No. 2 seed in the Sun Prairie sectional is Badger South Conference rival Stoughton (17-4).
"It's nice to get the reward of that No. 1 seed," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said. "Part of it is who you are grouped with. We are grouped with six Badger North teams and four Badger South teams. We beat all of the Badger South teams twice. It's that full body of work of the season and who you have played. You try to get that opportunity (of getting the No. 1 seed). We will have that first one at home and it will be nice if we win to have that second one at home."
The Cheesemakers are looking to get back to state for the second straight year. If Monroe beats the winner of Portage or Sauk Prairie, the Cheesemakers would face the winner of fourth-seeded Oregon or fifth-seeded Monona Grove in a regional championship game Feb. 24.
"I think it played out like I thought it would," Mathiason said.
Reedsburg (16-4) received the No. 3 seed over Oregon (14-7) despite the Panthers 65-48 win over the Beavers.
"Reedsburg has more overall wins, and that game against Oregon was their first game of the year," Mathiason said. "Reedsburg finished second in the Badger North. You wondered where McFarland would be since they are from the Rock Valley. It was a question what spot they would fit into."
Oregon, which is fourth in the Badger South, received a fourth seed and will get a bye as one of the top five seeded teams. McFarland received a sixth seed and will host 11th-seeded Mount Horeb.
The regional quarterfinal matchups slated for Feb. 20 are as follows:
Division 3
Ninth-seeded Brodhead at eighth-seeded Poynette
Division 4
Second-seeded Darlington received a first-round bye and will play the winner of seventh-seeded Wisconsin Heights and 10th-seeded Luther Feb. 23.
10th-seeded Dodgeland at seventh-seeded New Glarus
Division 5
Black Hawk (21-0), ranked No. 1 in the Division 5 Associated Press state poll, received a No. 1 seed in the WIAA Division 5 Oconomowoc sectional. 16th-seeded Madison Country Day at top-seeded Black Hawk
Ninth-seeded Juda at eighth-seeded Albany
12th-seeded Monticello at fifth-seeded Randolph
13th-seeded Cambria-Friesland at fourth-seeded Argyle
