Monroe finishes 2nd in silver bracket

RICHLAND CENTER - The Monroe volleyball team went 3-2 to take second place in the silver bracket at the Richland Center Invitational Saturday.

Monroe (6-7, 0-2 Badger South) opened up pool play against Stoughton. The Vikings knocked off the Cheesemakers 25-14, 25-13. The Cheesemakers rebounded to upend off Fennimore 25-14, 25-19 and then edged Lodi 21-25, 25-23, 15-12.

"We started out slow against Stoughton," Monroe coach Heidi Witt said. "Monroe got into a groove the next two matches."

Monroe advanced to the silver bracket and slipped by Sparta in three sets 18-25, 25-14, 15-3. Belleville clipped the Cheesemakers in the championship match of the silver bracket 25-18, 25-20.

"Monroe was scrappy and pretty strong at the net; however, we struggled with some missed serves and miscommunication at times. We need to focus on fixing little things we can control and many of those miscues go away."

Monroe senior Alicia Kuester had a team-high 26 kills in the invite. Junior teammate Sydney Mathiason racked up 22 kills, three blocks and five aces.

Senior Lexi Hilliard piled up 32 digs and notched five aces. Junior Alysha Witt had 46 assists and senior Hannah Neuenschwander had 40 assists.
