Monroe falls to Spartans

MCFARLAND - Sophomore Grant Newcomer scored three goals to lead McFarland to a 7-3 win over the Monroe boys hockey co-op Friday.

Newcomer scored the first goal on an assist by sophomore Jack McGinn at 1 minute, 33 seconds in the first period. It marked the first of three first-period goals by the Spartans. Newcomer scored his second goal on a pass from Bryce Flemming at 10:56.

Sophomore Luke Kuberski, Argyle, scored a goal. Teammate Colton O'Connor, Orangeville, then scored a goal on an assist by Monroe sophomore Travis Edmunds at 5:20 to slice the Spartans' lead to 3-2.

After McFarland took a 4-2 lead, the Cheesemakers' Ryan Molitor scored a power-play goal on passes from Roman Bauer and O'Connor to cut the Spartans' lead to 4-3. McFarland tacked on another goal late in the second period to take a 5-3 advantage. McFarland scored two more goals in the third period.

McFarland outshot Monroe 42-13 in the game. Monroe sophomore goalie Heath Bear had 35 saves. With the loss, Monroe drops to 3-13 overall and 1-7 in the Badger South.
