Monroe falls to Sauk; Raiders gash Poynette-Portage

SAUK PRAIRIE - The Cheesemakers lost a tough game to Badger North rival Sauk Prairie on Thursday, 3-0.

Monroe fell behind right away in the eighth minute and could never recover.

"Sauk came out very motivated, very determined," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said. "We played hard. It was a tough game. But it just wasn't our night."

The Eagles scored the second goal in the 43rd minute, just three minutes into the second half. The final score came in the 59th minute.

Katie Coplien had 12 saves in goal, but the Cheesemakers could only get eight shots on net.

"Katie had a few really nice saves," O'Neill said. "We just couldn't make it all click."

The Cheesemakers (8-7-2) will now wait and find out who they will play in the June 2 WIAA Division 2 playoff opener.

Poynette-Portage 0

POYNETTE - The Raiders continued their impressive run through the regular season and now boast a 19-1-1 overall record after Thursday's win over Poynette-Portage.

Katie Viney scored off of a pass from Hannah Kernen just 36 seconds into the game. Kernen and Viney each had two goals for the Raiders, who also received scored from Tara Duffin, Sierra Watrud, Mackenzie Christensen, Laura Durst, Lauren Narveson and Shelby Hubbard. Hubbard's goal in the 70th minute ended the game early with the 10-goal mercy rule.

Natalie Manion had just one save in goal for Sugar River, which has boasted one of the state's top defenses.

The Raiders, ranked No. 4 in the state in Division 2 by the WisSports.net WSCA Coaches Poll, travel to Stoughton on Tuesday for the regular season finale.
