MILTON - The Monroe football team lost to Milton 20-6 Friday night in a game that featured a lot of action in the closing minutes.
With the Red Hawks leading 7-6 late in the fourth quarter, the Cheesemakers allowed Milton's Billy Pitzner to score on a 5-yard run with 51 seconds to go to get the ball back.
The Cheesemakers had one last-ditch effort, but Monroe junior Tyler Elmer's pass on fourth-and-5 was intercepted and returned 35 yards for a touchdown to seal the Red Hawks' win.
Monroe (2-2, 0-2 Badger South) played short-handed with senior fullback Jaron Kuester missing the game due to a broken hand, and junior running back Jacob Kind missing the game due to a broken arm.
The Cheesemakers were limited to 117 total rushing yards. Monroe junior Isaac Allen rushed for 55 yards on nine carries.
With the win, Milton improves to 3-1, 2-0 Badger South.
Elmer was 8-for-16 passing for 94 yards with one interception.
