MONROE - For the second straight game, Monroe senior Carter Sawdey had a chance to be the hero and make a game-winning shot in the final seconds.
Sawdey's contested layup against Madison Edgewood at the buzzer rolled off the rim in a loss Friday. He wasn't going to be denied Saturday.
Sawdey scored on a layup with seven seconds to go to give the Monroe High School boys basketball team a 66-65 win over Brodhead in a nonconference game.
"We have been in this situation many times before," Monroe coach Brian Bassett said. "It seems like whatever could go wrong has gone wrong when we lose. Getting a win like this will give these guys a lift."
Monroe lost eight games by four points or less last year and the Cheesemakers lost their first two games this season by six points or less.
Monroe improves to 1-2 overall, and Brodhead drops to 2-1.
Brodhead was looking to knock off the Cheesemakers for the second straight year.
Brodhead junior Justice Tway banked in a shot with 18.5 seconds to go to give the Cardinals a short-lived 65-64 lead.
Sawdey scored a team-high 16 points. Monroe senior Alex Tordoff had 15 points, and junior Brayden Zettle added 13 points.
Brodhead junior Parker Johnson scored a game-high 21 points, and junior Brekan Day added 18 points. Tway chipped in 14 points.
Day had one last ditch shot, but his 3-pointer near the hlafcourt line went off the backboard before the buzzer.
The Cardinals made 17 of 22 free throws in the first half and led by as many as nine points.
"We started face-guarding Day," Bassett said. "He torched us in the first half. He's a very good player."
Monroe sophomore Nick Schumacher scored eight of his 10 points in the second half to give the Cheesemakers a lift.
"Nick doesn't lack confidence," Bassett said of Schumacher. "He's calm and cool. Our guys know he can score. Our guys trust him and know if we get him the ball good things will happen."
