BELOIT - Monroe baseball coach Dustin Huffman took nothing away from Corey Brunton's five-inning no-hitter against his team Monday in Beloit Memorial's 10-0 non-conference victory.

Huffman just didn't think the Cheesemakers made Brunton work hard enough to earn it.

"Just fastballs," Huffman said when asked what Brunton threw to keep Monroe off balance.

"He was consistent in the zone, but we were hesitant in swinging at the fastball. He was around the dish the whole time. We put a few balls in play, but we just weren't as aggressive as we needed to be at the plate."

Huffman said Brunton got ahead on almost every batter.

"We had a lot of two-strike swings just putting the ball in play because we weren't aggressive enough early in the count," he said.

Junior right-hander Dusty Burkhalter started for Monroe (2-7) and lasted 2 2/3 innings. He allowed four runs - three earned - on three hits while walking two and striking out one. Junior Trent Wyssbrod allowed two runs - one earned - on one hit and one walk in 1 1/3 innings, and junior Kevin Klopfenstein allowed four earned runs on three hits and two walks in one inning.

Huffman said the Cheesemakers didn't help any of their pitchers.

"The book only says (Monroe committed) two errors, but we made a lot of mistakes as far as not knowing who was supposed to cover the bag at second or an outfielder holding the ball too long," Huffman said.

"We made a lot of really basic mistakes on fundamental things - mistakes you can't make or they're going to score 10 runs and we're going to be done in five (innings)."

The Cheesemakers are scheduled to host Reedsburg today at 5 p.m.
