PLATTEVILLE - The Monroe High School girls swimming team opened up its season with an 89-81 dual meet win over Platteville-Lancaster Saturday.

Monroe sophomore Rachel Root had a hand in winning four events and senior Leanna Schwartzlow and Jessica Moehn played a part in winning three events to lift the Cheesemakers to the win.

Root won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2 minutes, 9.59 seconds. She added a first place finish in the 100 butterfly (1:04.26).

With 16 swimmers, Monroe is the smallest swimming team in the Badger Conference.

"Winning a meet is an uphill battle for us," Monroe coach Linda Moser said. "We are focusing on our times getting better. We are not going to talk about the scoreboard or add up the scores along the way. It was a surprise."

Root teamed with Nichole Lattin, Schwartzlow and Cat Weeden to take first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:04.33. The Cheesemakers also took second place in the 200 medley relay with a team of Moehn, Sarah Kind, Sarah Tomasiewicz and Angie Beaver, who finished in 2:14.80.

Schwartzlow won the 100 freestyle (:57.27) and she took second in the 50 freestyle (:26.54).

Moser said she's pretty sure that's the best 50 freestyle Schwartzlow has ever swam.

"Many of the girls picked up right where they left off," Moser said. "Many of the girls have PR'd (personal records) from their Gators times. That's the exciting part."

In the 200 freestyle relay, Root teamed with Tomasiewicz, Moehn and Schwartzlow to take first with a time of 1:53.03.

The Cheesemakers swept the top two spots in the 100 backstroke with Moehn taking first (1:12.58) and Beaver taking second (1:17.01). The Cheesemakers also took the top two spots in the 200 individual medley with Moehn finishing first (2:41.39) and Weeden second (2:44.64).

Weeden took second place in the 500 freestyle with a time of 6:26.98.

Moser said this is one of the first season-opening meets that a team has applied everything they have worked to improve.

"You swim by habit and muscle memory," she said. "A lot of times when you get to the first race you lose it."
