PLATTEVILLE- The Monroe Cheesemakers faced Platteville-Lancaster for the third time this season Tuesday and came away with the same result; a one-goal loss. This time, it happened in double-overtime and ended the Cheesemakers' season in the WIAA Division 2 regional semifinals.

Platteville-Lancaster's Henrick Klerfelt scored two goals, including the game-winner in the second overtime to send the Hillmen past the Cheesemakers, 2-1.

After a scoreless first half, Klerfelt gave Platteville-Lancaster a 1-0 lead at 44:39. The Cheesemakers tied it on junior Jason Atkinson's goal at 67:16 with junior Belsazar Castellanos getting the assist.

The score remained 1-1 at the end of regulation, sending the game into sudden-death overtime. After a scoreless first overtime period, Klerfelt took a pass from Platteville-Lancaster goalie Colin Thole and scored on a shot that struck the crossbar and hit the edge of the net to just beat Monroe goalkeeper Kramer Henning for the game-winner at 93:49. Henning had seven saves for the Cheesemakers.

"We outplayed them, but we just had difficulty scoring," said Monroe head coach Tony Stamm, whose team also suffered 1-0 losses to Platteville-Lancaster on Sept. 2 and Sept. 25. Tuesday's loss became the final game for eight seniors on this year's Monroe squad.

"I talked to them and they should be proud of their season. We didn't get the wins that we deserved, but we played with heart. We had a lot of obstacles, but we played through them all and developed as a team throughout the season," Stamm said.

The Cheesemakers ended their 2010 season with a record of 8-13-3.
