FORT ATKINSON - The Monroe girls tennis team closed the regular season strong by knocking off Fort Atkinson 7-0 in a Badger South dual match Tuesday.

"It was really great for the girls to get the win tonight," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "It's been a tough conference dual match season for us so to end the dual match season with a 7-0 conference win was a great confidence builder for the girls."

Monroe freshman Grace Tostrud defeated Fort Atkinson senior Emma Hartwig 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1 singles. Junior Maggie Setterstrom defeated Fort Atkinson's Alyssa McMiller 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles . At No. 3 singles, Monroe freshman Jensen Christensen beat Stephany Sykes 6-1, 7-6 (3). Junior Skye Allen knocked off Fort Atkinson sophomore Martina Wallig 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles .

"Tostrud at No. 1 singles and Christensen at No. 3 singles played very similar matches tonight," Saugstad said. "Each won the first set convincingly before tight second sets. Each girl was down multiple points in the second sets before fighting back to pull out wins. Coming back from (being) down set points is a big deal, so it was great for both freshmen to do it."

The Cheesemakers' No. 1 doubles team of junior Hallie Signer and sophomore Sam Huizenga defeated Kastyn Hebbe and Hannah Beckman 6-2, 6-4. Signer and Huizenga rallied from 2-0 and 4-3 deficits in the second set to win.

"I give them a lot of credit for finishing strong," Saugstad said.

At No. 2 doubles, Monroe juniors Parris Bunker and Kiara Miller beat Teegan Gray and Vanessa Torres 6-0, 6-1. Junior Lizzy Neuenschwander and senior Liz Skatrud gave the Cheesemakers a win at No. 3 doubles by defeating Fort Atkinson's Liberty Waychik and Megan Baker 6-0, 6-2.

"Both the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams had strong wins," Saugstad said. "Both teams were hitting the ball where it needed to go, moving well and won with strong performances."

Monroe won all three junior varsity matches played against Fort Atkinson.
