BELOIT - Freshman Emily Benzschawel scored a team-high 14 points off the bench and was one of three Monroe High School girls basketball players to score in double figures to help the Cheesemakers roll to a 77-28 season-opening win over Beloit Memorial on Tuesday.

Monroe sophomore Sydney Mathiason scored 11 points, and senior Hannah Vetterli added 10 points. Freshman Sydney Hilliard scored nine points and her older sister, junior Lexi Hilliard, chipped in eight points.

"You just want to get those nerves out in the first game," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said. "We played team basketball. I think we have a lot of people who will contribute this year. On any given night different people can do that based on the matchups. Now, we have to build off of that and keep going."

Sydney Mathiason scored seven of her 11 points from the free-throw line. The Cheesemakers dominated the game early, jumping out to a 49-10 lead at the half.

"Everyone got to play," Mathiason said. "I thought we did a really good job of sharing the ball. It was a nice team game. I'm proud of the way the girls played tonight."

Monroe will have its home opener Friday against McFarland.
