EVANSVILLE - The Monroe High School wrestling team's nonconference dual meet against Evansville-Albany came down to the final match.
With Evansville-Albany leading by one point, Monroe needed a pin from senior David Andrews in the 120-pound match to capture the win. Andrews was close to posting a pin a couple times in the first period but Evansville-Albany's Adam Staver pulled off an improbable comeback after trailing by seven points to upend Andrews 12-7.
Evansville-Albany clipped the Cheesemakers to win the dual 37-29.
"It was a very good dual for the fans," Monroe coach Tom Witt said. "It's what you want as a coach. It was very close and competitive. I told the kids what really matters is what happens in three weeks."
Both Monroe (9-5, 3-0 Badger South) and Evansville-Albany are in the same WIAA Division 2 regional. The top team from the regional tournament advances to the sectional team duals.
Staver scored on a couple takedowns in the third period to cap his comeback win.
Monroe senior Cole Murray, ranked 12th in the Wisconsin Wrestling Online state poll, defeated Evansville-Albany's Patrick Crull in a technical fall 18-0 at 138.
Evansville-Albany got a pin from top-ranked Nolan Kicmol (145). At 152, Monroe freshman Patrick Rielly defeated Tyler Aasen 7-2. Junior Sam Kind (160) defeated Evansville-Albany's Tyler Schmidt 5-2, and junior Dempzy Foley (170) got a pin for the Cheesemakers. Senior Isaac Allen (182) pinned Evansville-Albany's Austin Anderson in 5:11. Monroe freshman Bodie Minder, who wrestled up at 220, pinned Jeff Knudson in 1:12.
Monroe senior Hayden Arneson, ranked third at 195, lost to Evansville-Albany's Lucius Rinehart 6-3. Rinehart is ranked No. 1 at 220 but Witt said he's looking to drop down to 195 for the regional.
Evansville-Albany's Branden Lange pinned Monroe senior Kyle Walter in 3:48. Walter and Lange were locked in a tie at 2.
"He (Walter) was trying to get a takedown and was in a bad position and got pinned," Witt said. "That's a nine-point swing."
