Monroe co-op knocked out of playoffs by Stoughton

STOUGHTON - The Monroe boys hockey co-op team's rally came up short and the Cheesemakers' season came to an end with a 3-2 regional loss at Stoughton Tuesday.

Stoughton's Nolan Stapelfeldt scored two goals early on to stake the Vikings to a 2-0 lead. The Vikings had 11 penalties, including six in the second period as the Cheesemakers mounted a comeback.

Freshman Cade Janecke, Orangeville, scored a power-play goal on an assist by Colton O'Connor to cut the Vikings' lead to 2-1 13 seconds into the second. Monroe sophomore Payton Stauffacher scored a game-tying power-play goal to tie the game at 2 with 6:17 in the third.

About 3 minutes later, Stoughton's Brody Hlavacek scored the game-winning goal. Monroe sophomore goalie Heath Bear had 40 saves. The Cheesemakers outshot the Vikings 48-43.

Monroe finishes the season 4-18-2. It marked the third time the Vikings have defeated the Cheesemakers this year, with two of the losses coming by one goal.
