MONROE - Senior Kennedy Ludwig and the Monroe girls soccer team's defense made a 1-0 score stand up as the Cheesemakers were able to hang on for a nonconference win over Portage-Poynette Tuesday.

Ludwig scored the game's lone goal in the 42nd minute. Monroe senior goalkeeper Reily Pond had four saves in the first half and sophomore Alexa Bader had three saves in the second half to team up for the shutout.

The Cheesemakers (4-6, 0-4 Badger South) outshot Portage-Poynette 15-7. With the win, Monroe snapped a 4-game losing streak.

"It was a welcome sign," Monroe coach Kyle Kasten said of the Cheesemakers outshooting Portage-Poynette. "The girls had some extra pep in their step. We have had a tough stretch in our schedule with conference games and Sugar River. To come out and get a good win like this is something we all really needed."

Bader played goalie for the first time in several years - the last time she played keeper she played youth soccer in the Rebels program.

"I wanted to get her familiar with it again," Kasten said of Bader. "I know it's something she hasn't done in a while. I'm really happy she was able to step up for us."

Monroe returns to the pitch Friday with a 5 p.m. conference game against Stoughton at Honey Creek Park.
