EDGERTON - After three dual match losses to open the season, the Monroe High School girls tennis team bounced back to capture the Edgerton Quadrangular championship Friday.
The Cheesemakers won 17 of the 21 matches they played.
Freshman Grace Tostrud at No. 1 singles, junior Maggie Setterstrom at No. 2 singles and the No. 3 doubles team of junior Kiara Miller and senior Liz Skatrud won their flights.
"A couple of other coaches commented on how aggressive Monroe was playing today and how upbeat and energetic the girls were on the court," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "These are great compliments for us because that is what we are trying to do."
In the first dual of the day, Monroe coasted to a 7-0 win over Delavan-Darien. Tostrud and junior Skye Allen picked up their first singles wins of the year, and the doubles team of sophomore Sam Huizenga and junior Parris Bunker won its first match of the season.
"You could see the girls confidence and play improving throughout the day," Saugstad said.
Sparked by Setterstrom's 6-0, 6-0 victory over Natalie Cass, the Cheesemakers scored a 6-1 win over Columbus in their second dual of the quad.
Saugstad said Setterstrom "overwhelmed her opponent from the baseline and at the net."
Tostrud followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Columbus' Mary Larson, and Jensen Christensen gutted out a 4-6, 6-2, 10-3 victory over Taryn Lang at No. 3 singles.
"Both freshman singles players really came through for us there," Saugstad said.
In the final match against Edgerton, Monroe led 3-1 heading into doubles.
"Edgerton plays a unique brand of doubles with two players back at the baseline and many lobs, so I knew it wouldn't be easy to get that last win," Saugstad said.
Monroe's No. 3 doubles team of Miller and Skatrud were up to the challenge and cruised past Lauren Olson and Lindsey Lucas 6-1, 6-0 to give the Cheesemakers a 4-3 dual victory.
Setterstrom opened the dual against Edgerton with another dominating victory, 6-0, 6-0 over Madi Strahota.
"Maggie is an aggressive player, and she was placing her groundstrokes and volleys wonderfully during this match," Saugstad said.
Tostrud topped Edgerton's Molly McNett 6-2, 6-3. Tostrud trailed 3-0 in the second set before winning the final six games of the match.
"Grace was hitting precise approach shots all day and was hitting some of her best volleys of the season," Saugstad said.
At No. 4 singles, Skye Allen trailed Edgerton's Kayleigh Guertin 4-1 in the second set but rallied to win six of the last eight games of the match for a 6-2, 7-5 win.
Allen and Christensen placed second in their flights in singles. Monroe's No. 1 doubles team of Ashley Placek and Hallie Signer and No. 2 doubles team of Huizenga and Bunker also placed second in their flights.
