Monroe, Brodhead face off in regular season tune-up

MONROE - The Monroe Cheesemakers got eight, first-place finishes in the track events, plus four firsts in the field events to top the Brodhead-Juda Cardinals, 103-46 Tuesday. In the 200 meter dash, Alex Barenklau delivered a time of 24.2 seconds while Dylan Starck led the Cheesemakers in the 1600 meters in 4:39.0. Monroe's Caleb Ahrens took first in the 110 high hurdles in 16.1 seconds, and the 300 high hurdles in 44.9 seconds.

The Cheesemakers' relay teams also fared well, taking the 800 meters in 1:40.7, the 1,600 meters in 3:43.1, and the 3,200 meters in 9:03.9. In the field events, Michael Barrett finished first in the high jump, going six feet, six inches. Evan Brady took first for Monroe in the pole vault at 10 feet, six inches, while Nick Walker captured both the shot put (51-0 1/2) and the discus (136-11).

Brodhead-Juda got a first-place finish from Alex Wallace in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.8 seconds. David Earlywine was first in the 400 meter dash in 55.6 seconds. The Cardinals placed first in the 100 meter relay in 46.4 seconds.

Girls: Monroe 94 1/2, Brodhead-Juda 51 1/2

Senior Jaclyn Ditter, Brenna Bazley and freshman Lauren Werth played a big role in the Chessemakers' win over the Cardinals. Ditter placed first in the 200 meter dash in 27.5 seconds, while Werth zipped through the 100 meter dash in 13.1 seconds. Bazley topped the field in the long jump at 15-1 1/2.

Ditter, Bazley, and Werth then teamed up with sophomore Maria Eberle to lead the Cheesemakers to a victory in the 400 meter relay in 52.7 seconds. Molly Wyss gave Monroe a first-place finish in the 800 meter dash in 2 minutes, 49.4 seconds, and Cheyenne Foster went 28-11 to claim the triple jump for Monroe.

Shannon Klein of Brodhead-Juda took first in the 400 meters with a time of 1:03.6. The Cardinals took three of the six field events as Mariah Ahrens captured the high jump by going four feet, 10 inches while Heather Clankie claimed the shot put with a toss of 34 feet, four inches and the discus with a throw of 114-5.

The Cheesemakers' next track meet will be the first-ever Richard Glendenning Green and Lafayette County Track Meet on Thursday April 14.
