MONROE - The Monroe Brewers Home Talent team picked up their first win of the year Thursday night with a 5-0 win over Evansville.

Monroe scored two runs in the second inning and three in the sixth. Both Jeff Newcomer and Taylor Riese went 2-for-3 at the plate. Riese had a double and a triple and had three RBIs.

"We've been struggling our first two games," Newcomer said. "We got our college kids back. We're starting to play a lot better defense. A lot better than other games. We didn't swing the bats the best tonight, but we did enough to get the win."

Kris Rieder started on the mound for Monroe. He went the first three innings giving up one hit and four walks while striking out four. Adam Schiedegger relieved Rieder and pitched the final four innings to get record the win.

"Our pitchers did a lot better. They pitched last Sunday. They did a lot better tonight. They worked on some things and they showed it," said Newcomer.

Monroe (1-2) plays at Ridgeway on Saturday at 1 p.m.
