Monroe Brewers pick up first victory

PLATTEVILLE - Monroe's Seth Dascher made a diving catch in the bottom of the ninth inning to help preserve the Monroe Brewers first win of the season 7-3 over Shullsburg-Benton in a Home Talent League game Sunday.

With the bases loaded, Monroe's Mitch Marty was able to get two fly ball outs to preserve the win for the Brewers (1-1).

"It's always nice to get that first win no matter what sport," Monroe Brewers manager Scott Marty said. "From there the pressure is off."

Scott Marty said with the rain, a manager or player never knows what will happen. He said Dascher's catch for the first out in the ninth was big.

"You never want to give up a lead off hit or walk in the ninth inning," Scott Marty said.

Monroe's Kris Rieder earned the win. He pitched 7 2/3 innings and gave up three runs. He struck out four and didn't issue a walk.

Monroe's Matt Busjahn had a go-ahead RBI single in the seventh to give the Brewers a 2-1 lead. The Brewers added to their lead in the eighth with RBI singles from Ben Korth and Kramer Henning. The Brewers picked up three runs in the ninth on RBI singles by Scott White, Ben Korth and Dascher.



Argyle 1, Platteville 0

Argyle escaped Platteville with a 1-0 win in a pitcher's duel in a Home Talent League game Sunday.

Platteville was plagued by three errors. Argyle scored in the first on a walk and two errors. Argyle's Justin Crotty earned the win. Crotty pitched five shutout innings and struck out 11. With the win, Argyle improves to 2-0.



Wiota 17, Blanchardville 1

BLANCHARDVILLE - Wiota's Kory Tuescher and Merrill Brunson combined for six hits to lead Wiota to a 17-1 win over Blanchardville in seven innings.

Wiota (2-0) broke the game open with a five-run second inning to take a 6-1 lead. Tuescher and Brunson each went 3-for-4 to lead the Indians. The Indians pounded out 16 hits. Wiota's Taylor Wiegel went 2-for-3 and Jeff Solberg and Tommy Meier were each 2-for-4.

Wiota's Ben Conway pitched six innings and gave up one run on two hits. He struck out nine and walked three. Solberg pitched one shutout inning in relief.



Verona 11, Hollandale 2

VERONA - Hollandale couldn't keep up their solid first two innings and Verona rolled to an 11-2 win over the Rockies.

Verona (2-0) scored four runs in the third and four in the third to break the game open after it was tied at 2 after two innings.

Wiota's Jared Rear and Kyle Thompson were each 2-for-4.

Verona's Derek Burgenske went 3-for-3 and Ben Wallace was 3-for-5. Wallace pitched five shutout innings, while giving up two hits and striking out six.
