Monroe breezes by Wisconsin Heights

MAZOMANIE - The Monroe High School girls soccer team hadn't practiced for three days, so coach Kyle Kasten didn't know what to expect in the Cheesemakers' game at Wisconsin Heights on Monday.

The Cheesemakers (3-1-1) came out strong and scored three first-half goals en route to a 3-1 win over Wisconsin Heights.

"I was definitely nervous," Kasten said. "I didn't know what to expect since we didn't practice on Friday and over the weekend. The girls set the tone in the first 3 or 4 minutes. The girls played a good 90 minutes of soccer."

Monroe freshmaan Alexa Bader scored the first goal in the first half. Sophomore Emily Benzschawel scored to extend the Cheesemaakers' lead to 2-0. With 1 second to go in the first half, junior Brynn Ritschard scored to give the Cheesemakers a 3-0 lead at the half.

"I think in the first half it showed up on paper because we scored three goals," Kasten said. "I thought they played with the same mentality in the second half, but unfortunately they just didn't get one to go into the back of the net."

Monroe sophomore goalie Anna Latimer had six saves.

The Cheesemakers again played without junior Reily Pond who missed the game due to a leg injury.

"There are big shoes to fill without Reily," Kasten said. "She is a captain and an experienced player in her third year. The girls have done very well with the adjustments we have given them. It's been the next man up."
