DARLINGTON - The Monroe boys cross country team took top honors at the 13-team Darlington Invitational Saturday.
"Being our second race in five days, the legs were a little heavy," Monroe boys head coach Dave Hirsbrunner said. "We use these early season races as training tools, but we still want to perform as best we can. I will give our guys a tremendous amount of credit."
Monroe senior Dylan Starck finished sixth overall with a time of 17 minutes, 38 seconds, four seconds ahead of teammate Joel Henry. Steve Christiansen (17:57) finished 14th, Luke Peterson (18:00) was 16th and Ethan Moehn (18:15) was 20th.
"Overall, very nice grouping 1 to 5. Now we need to work on our pushers. Our sixth man (Payton Hoesly, 32nd place, 18:42) was a little back, but is improving every time out," Hirsbrunner said.
Darlington freshman Tyson Miehe finished second (16:41), nine seconds behind Tri State Home's Joshua Mirthl. Albany's Drew Mather and Pecatonica-Argyle's Cameron Colson finished back-to-back for eighth and ninth places, respectively, with a time of 17:49.
Monroe's 58 team points topped Darlington (66) in the boys race. Dodgeville-Mineral Point was third. Albany took sixth and Pecatonica-Argyle was seventh.
On the girls side, Darlington finished second (86), Albany was fifth (141), Monroe was eighth (224) and Pecatonica-Argyle took 11th (316). Dodgeville-Mineral Point ran away with the title (26).
Albany freshman Bailey Hlavachek finished seventh with a time of 16:28. Darlington's Cheyenne Wolfe was ninth (16:44) and teammate Christa Wamsley was 11th (16:58). Pecatonica-Argyle's Kendra Sigg (16:59) took 12th and Albany's Rosy Bauman (17:01) was 13th.
Elizabeth Dale was the top Monroe finisher, taking 34th with a time of 17:51, seven seconds ahead of teammate Molly Hlubek.
"We took a few small steps forward, but we have quite a ways to go," Monroe girls coach Brian Jefferson said. "Something that we are focusing in on is our aggressiveness. All across the board we need to get out and put ourselves in a position to win, or finish as high as we should be."
