MONONA - The Monroe boys track team competed at Monona Grove Friday night.
The Cheesemakers picked up a win in the 4x800 relay to start off the meet. Noah Tostrud, Derek Christiansen, Payton Hoesly, and Alex Barenklau combined to finish in 8 minutes, 16.66 seconds.
"The 4x8 led the meet off for us. It was a nice tune-up for a lot of those guys. They put a nice race together," said Monroe assistant coach Ryan Dahmen.
Another highlight for the Cheesemakers came in the 600, where Jake Hirsbrunner won in 1:22.88.
"The 600 is not a race we usually run," Dahmen said. "To be able to run that well and to run that hard is a compliment to Jake."
Senior Steve Christiansen took fourth in the 1,000 with a time of 2:38.85.
"Steve ran a solid race. The meet for all of our guys was an opportunity to focus in on one race," Dahmen said. "(We'll have a) chance to focus on conference next Tuesday."
Dahmen also praised the performances of Grant Keith in the pole vault - grant finished with a height of 12 feet - as well as the 4x100 relay team of Blake Bast, Forrest Klug-Hanson, Dakota Phillips and Seth Calaway, who finished with a time of 45.13 seconds.
"(The 4x100) ran their best time of the year," Dahmen said. "Grant had a good night. Grant's been consistently hitting 12 feet. He had some attempts at 12 feet, 6 inches."
Dahmen said with the focus not being on winning the meet, the Cheesemaker coaching staff came away pleased with the team's performance.
"All in all, with what we were going for in this meet, we came away very satisfied and healthy which is important," Dahmen said. "We're looking forward to conference."
