OREGON - After a lightning delay, the Monroe boys track team came back and swept the top three spots in the 800-meter run to seal a Badger South Conference championship.
The Cheesemakers won the conference for the fourth time in the last five years, outdistancing Fort Atkinson 167-125 for the title. Monroe junior Jake Hirsbrunner won the conference championship in the 800 with a blistering time of 1 minute, 57.79 seconds. He won a title in the high jump (6 feet, 4 inches) and was a part of the conference champion 1,600 relay team. Monroe senior Steve Christiansen took second in the 800 (1:59.43) and junior Noah Tostrud was third (2:02.60).
"We needed the 800," Monroe boys track coach Curt Miller said. "We took the top three spots and that hammered the nail down and the boys knew they would win the conference championship. Our kids just performed excellent top to bottom."
Monroe senior Alex Barenklau won the 400 (51.22) and took second in the 200 (23.92). Junior Ethan Moehn was a conference champion in the 1,600 (4:19.26) and junior Grant Keith was the conference champion in the pole vault (12-3). The Cheesemakers had three of the top four in the 1,600 with Tostrud taking third (4:26.24) and senior A.J. Cifuentes finishing fourth (4:39.31).
The Cheesemakers' 3,200 relay team of Payton Hoesly, David Kelly, Derek Christiansen and Moehn won a conference title (8:30.33).
Steve Christiansen teamed with Hirsbrunner, Hoesly and Barenklau to win the title in the 1,600 relay (3:34.96).
In the girls' conference meet, junior Tre Voegeli won a conference championship in the pole vault clearing 10-6 before the lightning delay.
"It's one of the few times a vaulter gets to be done after making one height," Monroe girls track coach Doug Miller said.
Lauren Werth took second in the 100 (13.52) and Abby Oudinot finished second in the triple jump, tying her season-best (33-0).
Miller was excited with a fifth place finish since the Cheesemakers entered the conference meet seeded sixth out of seven teams.
"I was really happy with what we did," Doug Miller said. "Oudinot went from seventh to second in the triple jump after the delay. She did that on a sore foot and gutted it out."
The Cheesemakers' 3,200 relay team of senior Lizzy Dale, junior Therese Hughes, freshman Kayla Einbeck and freshman Isabel Bazley finished second with a time of 10:22.29. Monroe sophomore Georgie Myers teamed with junior Mafer Larraga, Werth and Oudinot to take second in the 800 relay (1:51.49). The Cheesemakers added a third-place finish in the 400 relay (52.71), which was their fastest time of the season.
"I think the job the 4x800 relay did for us at the start of the meet set the tone for us," Doug Miller said. "They all PR'd."
