MADISON - Perennial state contender Madison Edgewood knocked off the Monroe boys tennis team 6-1 Tuesday.
"It was a learning experience for the boys tonight," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "Just like Edgewood, we've barely been able to hit the last week and a half because of the weather. No one on either side was playing their best tennis tonight, but Edgewood won because they were more consistent on all of their shots than we were. When you're not hitting the ball as well as usual, you have to be able to adjust and at least keep the ball in the court. We couldn't do that tonight."
The only win for the Cheesemakers came at No. 1 singles, where senior Taylor Soddy defeated Edgewood's Patrick McKenna 6-2, 6-2.
"Taylor came out with confidence and a smart strategy and executed it," Saugstad said. "The rest of our team could really learn from Taylor. He knows what he does well, and he forces his opponent to adjust."
Edgewood's Billy O'Brien at No. 2 singles defeated sophomore Kevin Noriega 6-0, 6-2 and at No. 3 singles Noah Colleti defeated Monroe sophomore Matt Monahan 6-3, 1-6, 6-2. Monroe's Jeremy Miller at No. 4 singles lost to Edgewood's Connor Maloney 6-1, 6-1.
The Cheesemakers' No. 1 doubles tandem of seniors Kevin Kohlstedt and Josh Riese lost to Edgewood's Bryan Baake and Charlie Kirsch 6-2, 6-0. At No. 2 doubles, Edgewood's John Hengel and Thomas Thelen defeated Monroe's Mark Jenson and Jared Nix (7-6 (6), 6-2. The Cheesemakers' No. 3 doubles team of Vince Wartenweiler and Ellyott Baertschi lost to Austin Lacey and Nick Contezac 6-1, 6-1.
"Mark Jenson and Jared Nix played a solid first set where they were moving well and taking over the net," Saugstad said. "They missed a few shots in the tiebreak, and couldn't keep that same momentum going in the second set."
