MONROE - A short-handed Monroe soccer team brought their record back to .500 with a 2-1 victory over Platteville Friday.
Senior Matt Coplien scored off an assist from junior Mckenzy Foley to give the Cheesemakers (2-0) a 1-0 lead at 21 minutes, 10 seconds. Foley then gave the Cheesemakers a 2-0 cushion at 31:42 off an assist from sophomore Atticus Pond.
Platteville scored a goal at the end of the first half to cut Monroe's lead to 2-1, but the Cheesemakers held on to finish the game strong despite more than a few obstacles.
"Heat was a little bit of a factor. And we had three players who were out of town for the Labor Day weekend, so they knew they'd have to pace themselves," Monroe coach Tony Vasquez said. "We started out quickly like we wanted to. We wore ourselves out a little bit, and we had an injury, too, so we were down to one sub."
Though Vasquez was satisfied with the way his team controlled the game early, he said the team needs to keep working on maintaining pressure. He said the team will need to have a better showing to compete with Dodgeville.
"The game today (against Platteville) and the game against Dodgeville are both important because they're teams we usually face in our playoff bracket," he said.
Monroe faces Dodgeville today at 11 a.m.
